Xbox One DRM for used games, 24 hour check-ins reversed,News,PS3,WII,XBOX 360,PSP,TECH, Written by Brandon Hofer  on June 19, 2013 Xbox One News: Xbox One policies will be reversed amid backlash; No online check-in and used games will work as they do today on the Xbox 360.Tweet 0,11,Like,Recommend 2,1 Comments,Unlike,Like, You and 9,353 others like this. UPDATE: 2:01pm - Don Mattrick confirms change in Xbox One policies. A few minutes after we posted the story below Microsoft came out with official confirmation. Here is what Don Mattrick said, "Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience. For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future. Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One. You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world. So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means: An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360. Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360. In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console there will be no regional restrictions. These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray. We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds. Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year." Original story: Microsoft has tried to usher in a lot of new policies with Xbox One and has upset a lot of people in doing so. Speaking with various outlets over the past few weeks, Microsoft has said it is listening to consumer feedback and if the new rumors are true then it appears Microsoft has changed course with the Xbox One, according to Patrick Klepek over at Giant Bomb What exactly does this mean? If the rumors turn out to be true then it means: No more always online requirement,The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours,All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360,Authentication is no longer necessary,An internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console,All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline,No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs, Region locks have been dropped. If these rumors turn out to be true then it is going to be the cause of celebration for most people. Still though, it would also mean the potential loss of some of the new policies that actually were really cool and would have been really beneficial. Up until this point we were going to be allowed to share our gaming libraries with 10 “family members.” That would have meant instead of bringing over 10 games to your friend’s house to play you would have had access to your entire library there. It is the iPod analogy where instead of carrying 20 music CDs you only had to carry one device that had all 100 of your music albums. It would have meant if you live in California but have family that live in New York then they could still gain access to your library and “borrow” games from you. While there hasn’t been any type of announcement saying that this new feature is going away I can’t see it remaining if these new rumors do indeed happen. Certainly removing the online check-in every 24 hours is big news for those who don’t have steady Internet. Being able to play your single player games offline is also really big too, especially if you are the type of person to take your console with you on vacation or, more importantly, if you happen to serve in the military and are on a base with no internet. Region locks potentially being dropped would be great too so gamers can import titles that might not be released in their region for any number of reasons. If everything works on the Xbox One as it does today on the Xbox 360 that is undeniably a good thing. Microsoft was getting raked over the coals by a lot of misinformation that was on the Internet. The company must shoulder the blame for that misinformation being out there but there are others who have been spreading the misinformation as well. The bottom line though is that Microsoft was taking a beating with the hardcore gaming audience and it has, apparently, forced them to backpedal on their ambitious plans with the Xbox One. Whether that actually turns out to be a good thing in the long run remains to be seen. Please keep in mind that these are only rumors and speculation at this point. None of this is fact yet. What do you think? If you had previously written off Xbox One, would this make you consider getting it? Source: Giant Bomb.

Dead Rising 3 Lets You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse However You Want By Xbox Wire Staff posted July 25, 2013 at 10:50 AM Everyone has a plan for the zombie apocalypse. Some will stockpile supplies and take to the hills. Others will band together and try to rebuild society. And then there are those who will enjoy their last days devising imaginative and entertaining ways to decimate as many of the undead as possible. In “Dead Rising 3,” Capcom wants to let players have the freedom to live out their own personal zombie survival stories. The game gives you a massive, persistent world to explore, countless zombies that want to devour you, and a plethora of vehicles and tools to destroy them with. How you fight and survive is entirely up to you. “Dead Rising 3” has a more realistic and gritty visual aesthetic, and some fans will choose to adhere to that and play the game as an authentic, zombie simulator. Stick to conventional weapons, conserve supplies, use light and noise to distract zombies so you can sneak by undetected as you scour the city for survivors and a means of escape. But “Dead Rising 3” would not be a true “Dead Rising” game without the franchise’s delightful zeal for the absurd.  You can don a full set of knight armor and build a laser sword, put on a luchador mask and pile drive zombies, and strip down to a banana hammock while wielding a fireman’s axe.  Hours can be spent building insane weapons out of random parts, like a teddy bear with machine guns strapped to its arms, or joy ride in race cars while plowing through crowds of zombies.  The options are endless, limited only by your own creativity and imagination. “The game has a serious veneer, but you can make ridiculous combo weapons and put on ridiculous outfits,” said Alan Jarvie, Art Director on “Dead Rising 3,” during a panel at Comic Con International: San Diego. “It’s all user choice and it’s so much more powerful when you’re enabled to make the game as quirky as you’d like, rather than us forcing comedy on you and limiting the experience.”  “Dead Rising 3’s” Xbox SmartGlass Companion for your mobile device provides more ways to play the game as well. It can set navigation waypoints that guide you and your co-op partner around the city, locate weapon caches, and call in deadly military airstrikes. “We wanted gamers to be able to press a button and things would go boom,” said Josh Bridge, Executive Producer on “Dead Rising 3. All the extra support gives you more fun, destructive tools to play with, but the development team has carefully balanced them as well to ensure they're not overpowered. The Xbox SmartGlass Companion also adds another layer of narrative depth for those who want to be fully immersed in the experience. When Nick discovers a transmitter in “Dead Rising 3,” an in-game character will call and text your real-life mobile device (“No data fees will be charged,” assured Bridge) with advice and hints.   While the Xbox SmartGlass Companion is optional and won’t dramatically impact how you play “Dead Rising 3,” it introduces a new dimension to your gaming experience by bringing it into the real world. In the words of Max Brooks, author of the critically-acclaimed novel that inspired the summer blockbuster “World War Z”: “This is a real game changer…it actually makes a whole new level of reality in a way like no other game has. I think that’s going to change everything and why it’s so brilliant.”  “Dead Rising 3” gives you the freedom and all the tools you’ll need to execute your personal strategy for the zombie apocalypse. How, and if, you survive the legions of the undead, though, will be determined this November when “Dead Rising 3” launches exclusively on Xbox One. During our Xbox Reveal event, we kicked off the fun with a cool video we called Xbox Anthem.

We love this video because it showcases some of our favorite people – ranging from Bill Gates, J Allard and Robbie Bach, who helped bring the original Xbox come to life, to Steven Spielberg, a frequent collaborator with Xbox, to people on the Xbox team that have contributed in major ways over the years. Folks like Todd Holmdahl, Ben Kilgore, Kudo Tsunoda, Alex Kipman, Boyd Multerer, and Shannon Loftis. And Turn 10 Creative Director Dan Greenawalt and Bonnie Ross and Kiki Wolfkill from 343 Industries. And so many more. We also showcased some of the most important luminaries in the industry. Like Crytek founder Cevat Yerli and Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne. The creative genius represented in the video is humbling and awesome all at the same time.  Perhaps my favorite part is the loyal Xbox fans represented in the video. From Eric Neustadter, who received the first Xbox Live gamertag, to Chris and Kelly Brown, the Xbox fans behind themarriedgamers.net. I love the story of Nori Fox, who bonds with her son, who has autism, through playing Xbox and shares her ideas with other parents. And what about Ray Cox? He has the highest Xbox gamer score in the US – and the world – according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Of course there is Zach Wigal, Daylon Furlough, Barbara Dunkleman and Jack Patillo from Rooster Teeth, Hassan Bokhari Hassassinade, and so many more stories that thrill and amaze us.  We love these stories so much we were inspired to build a site to showcase them. And to ask you to share your story. Xbox has 48 million Xbox Live members with 48 million stories behind each one. Check out this site, watch the stories and share yours. We’d love to hear from you.

The Beauty of Xbox One: A New Approach to Design By Xbox Wire Staff posted May 30, 2013 at 5:00 AM “Xbox has always had something to say. It’s always been bold with a strong personality,” said Carl Ledbetter, Creative Director, Industrial Design. “Xbox One needs to serve our most loyal gaming fans and deliver unique entertainment experiences, so its design has to make an appropriate statement that reflects its capability as an all-in-one entertainment system.”  Xbox One is developed to be the ultimate gaming and entertainment system, so the design team at Microsoft had to make every aspect of the experience —ranging from its appearance, to how users interact with its software —modern and sophisticated. It was designed to be simple and inviting, all while being attuned to the console’s internal components to ensure flawless performance.  The only way to accomplish this was to build Xbox One from the very beginning as an integrated system. Hardware and software were developed in tandem using a new, unified design language that grounded Xbox One in consistent, efficient and simple form and functionality.  Intuitive, Consistent and Immersive – A New Design Language “We wanted to think from a holistic perspective,” said Ramiro Torres, Creative Director, Design, on Xbox One. “When designing anything on Xbox, you have to consider everything from the way the hardware and user interface looks, to the way the box and branding is expressed. Everything has a role in the way you experience a brand.”  The design language, which uses a series of tiles and fluid motion, is steeped in the same DNA as Modern UI, the unifying language shared by Microsoft products like Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface.  It draws inspiration from 16:9, which is the number that describes the width-to-height ratio most common in today’s high-definition wide screen TVs. The aspect ratio is naturally pleasing to the eye, and synonymous with cinematic presentation and the living room entertainment experience, two qualities that the Xbox team wanted embodied by Xbox One.  The design language is visible in Xbox One’s hardware. The console is evenly divided between the matte and gloss –the front in particular clearly reflects this symmetry– and the top brings together two even rectangles, where the vent panel’s edge detail matches the appearance of a selected tile in the user interface.   The design language also provides a solid foundation for hardware and software design to come together. The team experimented with the same ratio, tiles and shapes that inspired the hardware, and quickly formed an appealing and natural visual experience that could be repeated in Xbox One’s dashboard and other software.  As the home to all content and basic navigation, dashboard design is a critical element and one where form and function have to intertwine. Its content tiles derive their size and shape from various fractions of a 16:9 space. This derivative, repeating design makes interacting with the dashboard, such as launching games or browsing the Xbox Live Marketplace, an experience centered on simplicity and intuitive navigation.  Grounding software design in this new language also ensures consistent experiences across other connected devices including TV, PCs, tablets and Windows phones. In the past, it was very different to develop software for a 17-inch monitor compared to a 52-inch TV, particularly with the various ways users control these devices, ranging from touch to voice.  With Xbox One, though, developers have a simple, unified design to guide them, enabling the creation of software that looks and feels familiar regardless of the device it’s on.  Liquid Black – Bringing Entertainment Forward Color is another core tenet of the design language and is expressed in Xbox One’s use of liquid black, the blackest black creatable, as a color palette for the brand. This selection was motivated by the same guidance followed by high-definition TV manufactures: dark colors accentuate content and bring the entertainment experience to the forefront.  The console and Kinect sensor are liquid black so they melt into the background when being used, allowing the content on your TV to dominate the living room. The user interface is overlaid on the same shade of deep black so that the content tiles on the dashboard are more vivid and easier to navigate and interact with.  Even the wireless controller uses liquid black to enhance visibility. The traditional A, B, X and Y buttons were re-designed so that the colored letters now float on a sea of rich, liquid black, a “triple-shot of injected resin,” clearly defining their placement on the controller.  In-House Iteration Bringing Microsoft’s vision for Xbox One to fruition required assembling the right design talent and experts to collaborate with the hardware and software engineering teams.  The Xbox One design team is composed of experienced industrial designers, product developers, human factor specialists and color, material and finishes (CMF) experts, and more. Carl Ledbetter is an 18-year veteran of Microsoft and led Xbox 360 S and Kinect industrial design. Ramiro Torres spent the last 16 years working on premiere brands including Microsoft, Nike and MTV.  The design and engineering teams worked right beside each other at Microsoft’s main campus in Redmond, Washington, where state-of-the-art facilities, including a user research and testing lab, a 3D modeling and print shop, and more, were at their disposal.  “Having the design and engineering teams working closely together was paramount to the design process,” explained Ledbetter. “It makes it faster and more efficient, and allowed us to rapidly prototype new samples for testing.  Constant iteration was instrumental.”  For instance, the design team would design and create a vent panel with a 3D printer in the modeling shop, and then send it next door to the engineering team, who would immediately evaluate it and supply notes on what needed to be adjusted. The design team would then manufacture an improved version, and the testing cycle would repeat until they had a prototype that not only looked great, but also functioned perfectly.  “We’re like a race car pit crew,” said Ledbetter. “Everyone has their own very important job, but we’re all working right next each other as a team to win the race.”  Before the team arrived at Xbox One’s final design, the team created 200 controller models, more than one hundred different versions of the Kinect sensor and “dozens and dozens” of console prototypes. Some prototypes reflected substantial design changes. Others incorporated subtle improvements resulting from the team’s tireless pursuit of perfection.  For example, the dimensions of the controller are refined to the closest tenth of a millimeter to ensure the best fit and comfort in gamers’ hands. Also, the configuration of the Kinect’s cameras and sensors was changed multiple times until it achieved a clean, simple appearance consistent with the rest of Xbox One’s hardware.  “Many people may not notice some of the small design touches,” said Ledbetter. “But we take pride in our craftsmanship in making sure everything is perfect. We want to create something that is exciting and will please our customers, both old and new. Nailing every last detail is critical.”  Xbox One was built by gamers, for gamers. The perfect balance of power and performance, Xbox One takes gaming to a whole new level. Stunning realism.  Advanced AI that adapts to the way you play. And a new generation of multiplayer that is both smarter and faster.  Xbox One is simply the best gaming console we’ve ever made.  As real as real life.  Immerse yourself in cinematic worlds that look like real life, with characters that feel more human.  Advanced AI technology and the processing power of Xbox One make game worlds come alive.
